FAQ about Family Therapy & Counselling

Do I need to prepare for the first session?

No, although if it helps you to feel more organised and calm, feel free to make some dot points.

How long do sessions last?

Sessions are one hour.  In the first appointments, sessions may run to 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Who should attend?

It’s up to you.  I see families, couples and individuals? who should attend depends on your circumstances.  Feel free to discuss this with me when making your appointment.  Deciding who should attend may change as counselling progresses.  For example, it often makes sense for parents to discuss their concerns in a session before inviting younger children to participate.

How frequently will sessions be?

The first sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly.  Subsequent sessions may be less frequent.

How many sessions will I require?

There are a group of clients who come to resolve a specific difficulty and attend between 3 and 7 sessions.

For people who have a more longstanding or lifelong complexity, counselling may continue intermittently with a brief cluster of sessions at times of crisis or acute difficulty.
